The orthopedic department was founded in 1959. On 2 January 1963, Dr Chen Zhongwei and Dr Qian Yunqing performed the world's first successful limb replantation here, on a worker whose hand had been severed at the wrist. In October 1978, Dr Yu Zhongjia reconstructed a functioning hand by transplanting a patient's own toes onto a forearm stump — the result became known as the "China hand".

The department is organised into nine sub-specialties. English names are our renderings; the hospital publishes the Chinese.
Trauma orthopedics is listed here as the hospital organises it. Our own service covers planned, post-traumatic reconstruction only — we do not coordinate emergency or acute trauma care.
